Closing Report opti ´10: Wave of optimism from Munich
Closing Report
· Positive mood among the approx. 21,000 trade visitors
· Five-percent rise in visitor numbers - as compared to 2009
· Further increase in international scope
· Keen interest from the next generation of opticians
The new year is getting off to a flying start: 20,700 trade visitors (cf. 2009: 19,700 trade visitors) flocked to opti '10. With a five-percent rise in visitor numbers, and higher levels of satisfaction among exhibitors and visitors, opti is continuing its successful course. This year again opti and its 434 exhibitors presented a 360° panorama of the market in ophthalmic optics - from spectacle frames, lenses, technology and shopfittings, to contact lenses and low vision solutions.
As a result of this success Dieter Dohr, CEO and President of GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH, gave an upbeat summary of the three days of the fair: "opti exudes charm and optimism. The positive mood on all three days in Munich is moving the market and giving it strength for the next 365 days. More and more people, from Germany and abroad, are being attracted to the clearly structured offering and the pleasant atmosphere at this fair. In particular the stronger focus on design is proving to be a very powerful magnet." This palpable air of confidence was also confirmed in a survey conducted by the independent opinion researchers Gelszus. Asked how they regarded the current economic situation, 48.2 percent (cf. 2009: 42.6 percent) of those surveyed rated it as "good to very good". This opinion was reflected, too, in the number of orders taken at the fair, as reported by Josef May, Chairman of the industry association SPECTARIS: "Over the last three days our sector has been given a head start by a perfectly organised opti '10. I have heard from a number of exhibitors that they have had more contacts and done more business than at last year's opti, and that was already a highly atmospheric event. It is now our job to take what we have seen and experienced here out to the end customers." Overall, great strides were made in terms of exhibitor satisfaction. The ratings of "good to very good" were given by 71.3 percent of the exhibiting companies - a rise of 14.8 percent as compared to the last event.
As regards the depth of the range on display at opti '10, more visitors gave the highest ranking of "very satisfied" than last year: 23.6 percent as compared to 19.6 percent in 2009. Increasingly opti is positioning itself as a dynamic international optics fair right at the start of the business year. This year the proportion of participants from abroad rose to 21 percent (cf. 2009: 16 percent). The countries from which the largest increases in visitors were registered were: Great Britain, Israel, Italy, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Slovenia, Poland and Russia. Interest in the opti Forum and its specialist lectures rose. In 2010 simultaneous interpretation in English was provided at these lectures for the first time. Around half of the visitors (9 percent more than last year) attended at least one of the free presentations on marketing, sports optics and technology themes. And more and more young people took advantage of this Forum and the information on offer at the opti Campus with its nine optometry colleges (institutions from Switzerland and Austria were represented for the first time). The next generation of ophthalmic opticians is making good use of opti as a meeting point. The fair is not only a place for practising professionals to meet up with each other and exchange experience, but also an opportunity for trainees and students to see the creativity and dynamism that is in the sector. Another important point of convergence this year for those interested in training and education was the stand of the ZVA, the German federation of ophthalmic opticians. Its president, Thomas Truckenbrod, was pleased with the good response not only to his federation's stand, but to the trade fair as a whole: "We were very happy to see that even on the Friday morning things were very busy in the exhibition halls. A visit to opti was very well worthwhile for everyone. Not only I, but also many of my colleagues were delighted with the excellent organisation of the event. For this reason I urge all ophthalmic opticians to make a firm date in their diaries now for opti '11."
opti '11 takes place from 28 to 30 January 2011, again at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre.
